Sointula is located on Malcolm Island, which divides Broughton Strait and Queen Charlotte Strait. The word “Sointula” means “Place of Harmony” in Finnish, and the island community was originally populated with Finnish settlers bound to create a utopian society. The descendants of these immigrants can still be found on the island today, amongst a thriving community of artists, musicians, retirees, environmentalists, and caring community members who value the island way of life.

The slow pace of Sointula suits many people looking for a different way of life, but there are still many who commute the Vancouver Island for work, have internet-based businesses or provide tourism, hospitality or service industries to the community. There is a fishing dock in the community, and the Ferry from Port McNeill runs several times daily.

Wander the town’s streets, grab a coffee, visit the museum or an art studio, enjoy a halibut burger at the harbour or take one of our day hikes. The miles of accessible beach and long stretches of flat, quiet roads make our island the perfect spot for beachcombing and bike riding. Malcolm Island is the place for people who want to explore for themselves. It offers a safe friendly environment for outdoor activities, as well as plenty of solitude for unwinding.

Contact SD #85 at 250-949-6618 for information or to register new students. The School has traditionally been the focal point of the community and provided many opportunities for social gatherings and participation. Rental of the School Facilities can be booked through B.C.O.S.
Quatsino Government WarfQuatsinoMarine ServicesThe small wharf shed offers shelter for those waiting for a drop off or to be picked up. As Quatsino is a remote community, this wharf is one of only a handful in BC that has not been divested into private ownership and is still being maintained by Transport Canada.
St. Olaf's Anglican Church250-902-0512 (Vicky)QuatsinoRegious OrganizationSt. Olaf’s was originally built as a one- room school in 1897 and served 11 to 36 students from grade one to nine over the next thirty-three years. When the new larger school was built the old school was sold to the Anglican Diocese. Services have been held by visiting Ministers over the past seventy years. The Church is often booked for memorials and christenings and has become a popular and unique wedding venue. The Church has the honour of being the first on the North Island’s Historic Site Registry and visitors from around the world have signed St. Olaf’s Guest Book.
